COASTAL AND MARINE RESEARCH

CCMS conducts studies and surveys in the field of modern coastal and marine processes, including physical geography, oceanography, hydrology and climate changes, coastal and marine geomorphology, geology and paleogeography, living and non-living natural resources etc., among the main are:

• Research and monitoring of coastal sand dunes and beaches.
• Assessing the impact of port and coastal defense structures on the coastal zone and marine space and accompanying processes.
• Development and maintenance of geodatabases, coastal and marine mapping and application of Geographic Information System (GIS) to coastal and marine studies.
• Carry out field and marine observations and measurements to study coastal zone processes and marine space.
• Use of remote sense methods for exploration and monitoring of the coastal zone and the marine space.
• Research and monitoring of sea water quality.
• Assessing the sensitivity of coastal areas to oil spills and other pollutants.
• Developing and implementing innovative methods for the analysis and management of beach and marine litters.

COASTAL & MARINE STRATEGIES

  • CCMS develops and examines scientific basis for sustainable coastal development and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM).
  • By developing programs and strategies, CCMS advocates for the implementation of the European Union (EU) Integrated Maritime Policy, Blue Growth Strategy, Concept for Circular Economy, European Green Deal, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. and other EU strategies and concepts.
  • Elaborating scientific basis and expertise to support implementation of Directive 2014/89/ of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 for Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP): defining indicators for analysis of marine space, studies of Land-Sea Interactions (LSI), identifying conflict and compatible coastal/marine human activities and environment, developing MSP plans.
  • Developing long-term environmentally and economically balanced solutions for the protection and sustainable use of coastal and marine resources under climate changes.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER, NETWORKING AND CONSULTANCY

  • Development and coordination of research and management/infrastructural national, EU and other projects.
  • Participation in projects and activities initiated by other national, foreign and international organizations to support CCMS mission.
  • CCMS promotes knowledge transfer on a national and worldwide scale and participation of experts to consultant work groups to national and EU/international institutions and authorities.
  • CCMS conducts educational, publishing and editorial activities in the field of coastal and marine science in the Black Sea and the World Ocean environment, etc.
  • CCMS experts are experienced in organizing seminars, thematic workshops, roundtables, conferences, trainings or other events to promote project results and inform different stakeholders.
  • CCMS has established a large network of contacts with related Bulgarian, EU and international organizations.
  • Link and cooperate with industry on a national and international scale.
